Muttaqin, were supported by a coalition of parties: Partai Nasional Demokrat (National Democratic Party, NasDem), Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (United Development Party, PPP), and Golkar (Partai Golongan Karya, Functional Groups Party).
This was not a period of political openness: as is well known, party contest was limited to three parties, and structural impediments restricted the potential of two of those parties (Partai Persatuan Pembangunan, PPP and Partai Demokrasi Indonesia, PDI).
The Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (United Development Party, PPP) drew strong support in Tasikmalaya during that time, but the Golkar-dominated government gave preferential treatment (project funding, etc.) to religious schools that supported Golkar, and discriminated against those that supported the PPP, forcing religious figures to make painful but highly consequential decisions about which party to support.
A 2004 Indonesian newspaper article classified Islamic parties into the following categories: orthodox Islamic parties, which included the Crescent Star Party (PBB, Partai Bulan Bintang); progressive Islamic parties, which included the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS, Partai Keadilan Sejahtera); traditional Islamic parties, which included the Indonesian Nahdlatul Community Party (PPNUI, Partai Persatuan Nahdlatul Ummah Indonesia), the United Development Party (PPP, Partai Persatuan Pembangunan), and the Reform Star Party (PBR, Partai Bintang Reformasi); modernist Islamic parties, which included the National Mandate Party (PAN, Partai Amanat Nasional); and nationalist-religious parties including the National Awakening Party (PKB, Partai Kebangitan Bangsa).
In the general elections of the Soeharto period (1971, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997) the people of Kotagede voted for all three of the political parties that contested them: the Unity Development Party (Partai Persatuan Pembangunan, PPP), an alliance of Islamic political parties, the ruling party Golkar (Golongan Karya) and the Indonesian Democratic Party (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia, PDI) (Zaidan 2003).
Two other parties, namely the Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP, Development Unity Party) and the Partai Demokrasi Indonesia (PDI, Indonesian Democratic Party), were forced to accept a minor role.
In West Kalimantan, the Chinese were distributed evenly between the major parties such as the PDI-P, GOLKAR, PAN (Partai Amanat Nasional), a nationalist-oriented party chaired by Amien Rais, PBI (Partai Bhineka Tunggal Ika), PPP (Partai Persatuan Pembangunan), an Islam-based party, PKD (Partai Katolik Demokrat), a Catholic-based party, and PDR (Partai Daulat Rakyat), a party founded by Adi Sasono, a strong proponent of ekonomi rakyat (people's economy).
Overall, the results revealed that the Jakarta Post reported in 5,331 articles about Golkar, more than twice as much as parties like the National Awakening Party (Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa, or PKB; 2,211), the National Mandate Party (Partai Amanat Nasional, or PAN; 2,142) or the United Development Party (Partai Persatuan Pembangunan, or PPP; 2,026).
PPP = Partai Persatuan Pembangunan. Demokrat = Partai Demokrat.
When the results were announced, only six parties, namely, the PDIP, Partai Golongan Karya (Golkar), Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP), Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB), Partai Amanat Nasional (PAN) and Partai Bulan Bintang (PBB) received a significant proportion of votes.
