CDOT completed an indepth analysis of its pedestrian crash data from 2005-2009 and, based on those data, developed a pedestrian safety education campaign directed at Chicago motorists and pedestrians.
Petersburg, Fla., where officials used the city's top-ranked pedestrian death ranking as a catalyst to build miles of new bike lanes, implement bicycle and pedestrian safety education, and use technology to make the streets safe for walking, according to Joe Kubicki, director of the city's Department of Transportation and Parking.
(17) Although pedestrian-related crashes cause disability and death among primary grade children, no published studies have been reported on primary grade teachers' role in pedestrian safety education. The purpose of this study was to examine primary grade teachers' perceived roles in pedestrian safety education.
Specifically, this study explored how important primary grade teachers perceived pedestrian safety education to be compared to other unintentional injury topics.
With 35,160 elementary schools with variation in elementary school teachers' pedestrian safety education activities, 320 study respondents were needed to be able to generalize the findings to the total.
A 4-page instrument was developed to assess primary grade teachers' perceived role in pedestrian safety education. The instrument was designed with constructs from self-efficacy, (20) stages of change, (21) the health belief model, (22) and a comprehensive review of the literature.
However, only 16% of teachers reported that pedestrian safety education was required for the grade levels that they taught (Table 2).
"Ideally, everyone would benefit throughout their life from a road safety curriculum that begins with pedestrian safety education and practical training, followed by cyclist safety education and more practical training."
Providing pedestrian safety education is one of the activities of the Safe Community Partnership, a local Las Vegas coalition whose mission is to reduce fatalities and injuries that result from traffic-crashes.
