Led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Public Health Performance Standards Program is a collaborative effort of seven national public health organizations, including APHA.
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Public Health Services gathered more than 110 representatives from the private and public sectors to assess the state's health services using the National Public Health Performance Standards Program.
New Hampshire plans to conduct its second assessment using the National Public Health Performance Standards Program in 2009 to see how far it has come, and Ascheim says she expects to see many improvements.

Health workers who are attending APHA's 135th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., in November can learn about the revised instruments and National Public Health Performance Standards Program during two scientific sessions.
"In the end, the goals of the performance standards program are a better provision of public health services and better health for all," Baddy said.
The National Public Health Performance Standards Program is a partnership of CDC and six organizations: APHA, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, National Association of County and City Health Officials, National Association of Local Boards of Health, National Network of Public Health Institutes and Public Health Foundation.
The county conducted an assessment of its public health system in 2003 using the National Public Health Performance Standards Program, finding that the county was performing well in areas such as surveillance, disease management and linking residents to health care.
In coming years, health leaders will have updated instruments available to them as they undertake their assessments through the National Public Health Performance Standards Program. Based on feedback received during the past four years of use, officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials are working on improvements to the instruments, making them more user-friendly and streamlining many of their questions.
