Wahrend die Menge der eingesetzten Metalle in vielen Anwendungen je Produkteinheit kleiner wird (Miniaturisierung), werden sie zunehmend stofflich vermischt, werden immer mehr Elemente des Periodensystems eingesetzt und diese immer vielfaltiger in Produkten verwendet.
Inzwischen werden alle stabilen Elemente des Periodensystems technisch genutzt.
Der heute zu beobachtende Megatrend der Digitalisierung wird durch die Nutzung der Metalle, die die Menschheit schon lange verwendet, zusammen mit den "neuen" Metallen des Periodensystems erst moglich.
Im Gegenteil: Die Entdeckung des Periodensystems sowie die Erkenntnisse zur Funktionalisierbarkeit der Metalle und Halbmetalle des Periodensystems machten die nun beginnenden Transformationen erst moglich.
