Positive Behavioral Support (PBS) adapted from Applied Behavior Analysis provides a systematic approach to establish positive behaviors and then strategies for reinforcing those behaviors (Carr, Dunlap, Horner, Koegel, Turnbull, Sailor, and Fox, 2002.
The result also showed that the experience has an important role at the level of using the positive behavioral support strategies because teachers at the first year on the field face great difficulties at dealing with the behavioral problems and specialists at centers, so it reflected on their performance and the level of using (PBS) strategies, as teachers with experience had more training which reflect on their performance for using PBS.
While IDEIA calls for the use of behavioral supports previously mentioned, the statute does not clearly define what is required of an FBA or positive behavioral supports. Since the 1997 reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), schools have been required to conduct functional behavioral assessments (FBAs) and develop positive behavioral support plans for students with disabilities who were exhibiting challenging behaviors that interfered with their learning or the learning of others.
Along the lines of meeting federal regulations, the new Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act is calling for greater use of positive behavioral support.
