Pilots often notice slight differences between navigation information on a chart and their primary navigation display. Differences of three degrees or less may result from the manufacturer's application of magnetic variation and are operationally acceptable.
Only then did I exit SUSPEND on the GPS, enter BQS as a waypoint, activate "Direct To" BQS using the GPS (while still centered on the #2 VOR-displayed radial) and return my focus to the GPS and primary navigation display (in this case, an HSI) to fly toward the VOR.
This focus of this error is so common it has a name among instructor pilots: misusing the "button of death." The button in question is labeled differently by different manufacturers, but it has a similar function--selecting whether GPS or VOR/localizer functions are displayed on the primary navigation display.
