Under the coupon bond method for TIPS, taxpayers must include in income each year (using their regular accounting method) qualified stated interest, which is computed by multiplying the inflation/ deflation-adjusted principal by the stated interest rate.
The coupon bond method is a simplified version of the discount method (see below) that will apply if two conditions are satisfied: (1) the bond must be issued at par; and (2) all stated interest must be qualified stated interest. (5m) A bond is issued at par if there is less than a de minimis difference between the bond's issue price and its principal amount at issuance.
A debt's adjusted issue price is its original issue price plus accrued original issue discount (OID) less payments made (other than payments of qualified stated interest); see Regs.

For example, stated interest is considered OID unless it meets the definition of qualified stated interest; see Regs.
Stated interest that is unconditionally payable at maturity on short-term tax-exempt bonds may be treated as includable in the stated redemption price at maturity or as qualified stated interest at the choice of the taxpayer, provided all short-term tax-exempt bonds are treated in a consistent manner.

This is "the sum of all payments provided by the debt instrument other than qualified stated interest payments." Again, in the case of a demand note, this amount should be relatively close (if not equal) to the note's face amount, as the holder may demand payment at any time.
Finally, any premium allocable to an accrual period will be treated as a deflation adjustment to the extent it exceeds the qualified stated interest for the period.
