A statement on RIMAP's website said: "Now that RIMAP and the ANMM have identified a possible site in Newport Harbour that might be the Lord Sandwich ex Endeavour, the detailed work must begin to prove it.
A full formal announcement about the discovery is due to be made on Friday by RIMAP.

Their discovery off the city of Newport in Rhode Island comes 18 years after a RIMAP scientist found documents in an archive that hinted the Endeavour had been sunk there after being renamed.
In 2014 the Australian National Maritime Museum funded RIMAP to investigate the theory further.
"This agreement underlines the strength of that relationship and also shows that FERMA rimap
is receiving broader international as well as European recognition."
RIMAP said in a statement: "RIMAP has mapped nine archaeological sites of the 13 ships that were scuttled in Newport Harbour in 1778 during the American Revolution.
"All of the 13 ships lost in Newport during the Revolution are important to American history, but it will be a national celebration in Australia when RIMAP identifies the Endeavour."
