The project was funded by the ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the research was coordinated by the Indian Council of Medical Research Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance ( RISUG), now in the last leg of its trials, is slated for a restricted, monitored launch by the end of this year.
With the new technology developed by Guha, RISUG now has two new variants -- Risugadv or Risug- PH.
Once it is injected, Risug, Risugadv or Risug- PH will remain active for 10 years or more.
RISUG has proven its contraceptive effectiveness with men studied for the past 25 years in India, and animal studies prove fertility can be restored with an injection of another chemical that cleanses the contraceptive substance.
"RISUG is the most significant breakthrough in contraception, period, since the birth control pill," says Weiss, who performed the procedure in 2002 as part of a World Health Organization project in India.
" Since late ' 80s we have been working on a method called RISUG an acronym for Reversible Inhibition of Sperm Under Guidance," says Dr Ambwani.
RISUG promises to be a sure shot method to prevent pregnancies.
People who have been tested with RISUG have not shown any complications and have been successful.
