The Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY), the largest such programme, was launched in 1989, following the merger of the National Rural Employment Programme (NREP) and Rural Landless Employment Guarantee programme (RLEGP).
The NREP was supplemented in 1983 by a new rural employment programme, called the Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme (RLEGP).
The estimates are that the NREP and RLEGP in India created 2,035 million mandays of employment during 1980-1985; they provided an average daily employment of 1.1 million mandays or 7 percent of the estimated unemployed mandays in rural areas.
Its purpose is, among other things, reduction of poverty and unemployment in the rural areas, through such programs as the "Integrated Rural Development Program (IRDP),' The "Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Program (RLEGP),' etc.
