Overt aggression (OA) refers to behaviour that involves direct confrontation with peers, while relational aggression (RA) is defined as behaviour or actions aimed at damaging the social reputation or the social status of the victims and isolating them from their group of friends, even by using their peers (Juvonen & Graham, 2014).
The anti-bullying law covers not only physical, but also verbal, relational aggression, cyber-bullying and sexual bullying.
Over the years, teachers and caregivers completed the MacArthur Health and Behavior Questionnaire, which includes subscales on depression, overanxious, social anxiety/withdrawal, oppositional defiant behavior, conduct problems, overt aggression, relational aggression and ADHD.
This cross-sectional study involved sample of an ethnically diverse (African American, Hispanic, non-Hispanic white and others) cohort of 330 fifth-grade girls from 3 metropolitan areas that provide information regarding their aggression levels (physical, non-physical and relational aggression) measured by Problem behavior Frequency scale.
The results suggest that relational aggression, not relational bullying, was associated with increases in victimization.
(2004), relational aggression corresponds to the NGQ items "spreads rumors" and "isolates others," whereas physical aggression relates to the item "engages in violent acts." Three nominees were to be listed, in order of priority.
Relational aggression can impact girls' programming (Ditter, 2009; Sammet, 2010), and despite goals to develop authentic relationships, some girls resist programmatic interventions and continue to engage in relational aggression (Sammet, 2010).
Although physical and relational aggression have been observed in young school-age children, younger children are more likely than older children to use direct (physical) methods of aggression (Monks et al., 2002; Perren & Alsaker, 2006).
Present research aimed to study the dysfunctional parenting as a determinant of relational aggression (RA) among adolescents.
Terri Townsend defined bullying as "repeated, offensive, abusive, intimidating or insulting behaviors: abuse of power; or unfair sanctions that make recipients feel humiliated, vulnerable, or threatened, thus creating stress and undermining their self-confidence." Townsend went on to point out that "depending on the situation, bullying may be termed horizontal violence, hazing, relational aggression, or workplace incivility." She further noted that when the bullying behavior occurs among nurses of the same authority level "(as when a nurse bullies another nurse or a manager bullies another manager)" the behavior is often described as being horizontal hostility or lateral violence.
Relational aggression is a type of bullying typified by psychological abuse.
Ringrose rightly critiques the trend in the psychological and education literature on bullying (Bjorkqvist; Crick and Grotpeter; Jackson et al.) to pathologize girls' bullying behaviours and essentialize relational aggression as a feminine mode of bullying ("'Just'").
