Significance of including a surrogate arousal for sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome diagnosis by respiratory polygraphy. Sleep.
MONDAY, July 23, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- For patients hospitalized with decompensated heart failure, portable sleep monitoring with respiratory polygraphy can accurately diagnose sleep apnea, according to a study published in the July issue of CHEST.
Respiratory polygraphy was performed in the first 24-72 hours after hospital admission, and patients with an AHI of at least 15 events per hour were considered to have OSA.
The diagnosis of OSA was established by respiratory polygraphy (Embletta Gold, ResMed), which included continuous recording of oronasal flow and pressure, heart rate, thoracic and abdominal respiratory movements, and oxygen saturation (Sp[O.sub.2]).
In the CPAP group, optimal CPAP pressure had been titrated by an auto-CPAP device (REMstar Pro M Series with C-Flex, Philips Respironics) and verified by repeated respiratory polygraphy at the time of inclusion in the study.
Sleep studies were conducted with either full standard polysomnography or respiratory polygraphy following Spanish guidelines.
All patients underwent respiratory polygraphy at home to measure variations in heart rate, breathing, body position, and snoring intensity Patients who had 8-24 episodes per hour of apnea or hypopnea while sleeping were considered to have possible sleep apnea; those who had 25 or more episodes per hour were considered definite cases.
