Independent retailers have a new resource for some of the latest technology solutions thanks to the recent alliance between the National Grocers Association (NGA) and the Food Distribution Retail Systems Group (FDRSG).
Many of NCR's pharmacy customers, says Shelton, also have arrangements with NCR's Retail Systems Group (based in Atlanta) that focuses specifically on high-availability transactions, processing, point-of-sale terminals, data warehousing, signature capture and scanners.
For another, the Advanced Checkout Solution offers a "new interface with the consumer," called the consumer information display, says Bruce Jones, NCR's product manager, retail systems group. The color monitor display incorporates" the weight reading from the scanner/scale, as well as a scrolling receipt and advertising space.
"Convenience store owners would likely suffer if grocery stores begin pricing gasoline like they do groceries," says Waters of Retail Systems Group. "They are afraid that grocers may deeply discount gas like a loss-lead item just to get people into their parking lots and, eventually, into their stores.
"Convenience stores will need to take a closer look at their pricing strategies, they will need to develop loyalty programs of their own and really work at developing their offering to compete better against these new outlets," says Auinbauh of Retail Systems Group.
(See "Can SIL break the computer language barrier?" Progressive Grocer, January 1991.) SIL was developed and is maintained by the non-profit Food Distribution Retail Systems Group (FDRSG), which consists of about 13 wholesalers, 17 hardware and software vendors and a few chains.
"The problem is that very few vendors/suppliers have pushed hard to bring C-stores into the 21st century," says David Waters, president of Retail Systems Group LLC, a subsidiary of Houston, Texas-based Digital Consulting & Software Services.
The NCR Retail Systems Group has taken a different approach to self-checkout.
