Keith Murray was one of the most important and influential designers in the field of glass, ceramics and metalware and was awarded the Royal Designer for Industry in 1936.
He became the youngest Royal Designer for Industry at 31 in 1961, while in 1969 he opened his first kitchenware shop in London.
In 1940, Gordon was elected Royal Designer for Industry. He also became the principle architect of the government's Utility furniture programme, which aimed to streamline furniture design using approved materials in the light of wartime shortages.
Murphy was amongst the first recipients of the award of Royal Designer for Industry in 1938, a singular honour that he was only briefly to enjoy: he died in July 1939, at the age of fifty-four.
