Having the sickle cell trait presents the same challenge, says Sonja Banks, president and chief operating officer of the Baltimore-based SCDAA. While most prevalent among Black people, Black athletes and their families are often not anxious to learn whether the athlete has the trait or disease for fear simply having the trait will scare athletic recruiters and coaches away from the prospect, regardless of potential.

She currently serves on the SCDAA Executive Board as its Awards Chairman.
The SCDAA presented checks in the amount of $2,000 each to the Greenville Free Medical Clinic and the Lexington County Children's Dental Clinic in honor of Dental Assistants Recognition Week.
At the end of the month I traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC, to attend the SCDAA annual meeting and the same weekend I flew to Fresno, CA, to attend the CDAA Annual Session, where I was the installing officer.
