As the rapporteur points out," the US has always taken the line in the WTO that the natural hormone residue content of meat from treated animals is negligible owing to the substances' short half-life and also in relation to consumers' own production of such substances".--Back in 1998, the Commission asked the Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures relating to Public Health (SCVPH) to assess the potential adverse effects on human health of hormone residues in meat and meat products, as the WTO panel had argued that the European Union had not furnished adequate proof to justify a prohibition on imports of meat and meat products from animals treated with six different hormones.
For its part, the SCAWAH reported that the use of BST increases the incidence of foot and leg disorders and that it can affect adversely reproduction as well as induce severe reactions at the injection site.The Scientific Committee on Veterinary Measures relating to Public Health (SCVPH) acknowledged in its Opinion of March 16, 1999 that significant gaps exist in scientific knowledge on the possible effects of the use of BST on public health and asked for further studies.
