The Shannon Dolphin and Wildlife Foundation (SDWF) "soundwaves" project has received two years funding from Britain's giant Vodafone mobile phone company.
"The eventual objective is to establish a number of underwater transmitting microphones in the estuary," said Dr Simon Berrow, a marine biologist and SDWF project officer.
It is planned to transmit the sound from the microphone via the mobile phone network to the SDWF's Kilrush base in Co Clare where it will then be streamed on the Web.
