PAUL Lawrie is baffled by the absence of Europe's top names from next week's Seve Trophy.
"There will never be another Seve in terms of a talisman.
"The players were invited to give their messages in private and I don't think it would be right for me to publish them, but the thrust of all the messages was what a wonderful inspiration Seve had been to golfers the world over and particularly in Europe, and many of them actually said that Seve was their own inspiration to playing golf.
Wherever I had opted to watch championship golf in those days, there was never any problem spotting Seve. Head for the biggest crowd and there he'd be, stunning us with his inspirational touch around the greens, putting our hearts in our mouths when his ball headed for the trees or a juicy big bunker with a lip like a cliff edge.
"I came across Seve a couple of times in my career and I have memorable recollections of the wonderful man that he was," Tarratt told Gulf News yesterday.
Former world No.1 Tiger Woods paid homage to the stylish Spaniard, saying: "Seve was one of the most talented and exciting golfers to ever play the game.
It was all too much for Seve's countryman Olazabal, a long-time friend of the flamboyant star.
Seve, who had been diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008, received the last rites on Friday while being cared for by his ex-wife Carmen Botin and their children Baldomero, 20, Miguel, 18, and Carmen, 16.
The family's statement read: "At 02:10 hours, Seve Ballesteros - accompanied by his family at his home in Pedrena - died due to respiratory failure.
He hope to raise at least pounds 300,000 through the 'Seve Summer' initiative.
A spokesman said: "We are in contact with Seve's advisors and have been told he very much wants the Seve Trophy to proceed."
After being kept in for further tests, Seve told the world's press that a brain tumour had been detected and that he was due to have a biopsy.
