The station began broadcasting in 1993 but voluntarily ceased on June 17, 1998, when Federal Judge Claudia Wilken reversed an earlier decision that had granted both Free Radio Berkeley and SFLR an injunction against the FCC and the police shutting down our microradio stations.
During that time, volunteers at SFLR applied for a microradio license for the station using an FCC application form modified by the National Lawyers Guild Committee on Democratic Communications.
After much debate, the volunteers at SFLR held a formal press conference on February 12 to inform the press and the FCC of our decision to start broadcasting without a license.
