Despite some criticisms that SYETP provided mere "make-work" jobs within public agencies and non-profit agencies, advocates applaud the federally-funded summer youth program for providing hundreds of thousands economically disadvantaged 14-21 year olds with their first paid jobs and valuable work experience and education during summer months.
In many cities, SYETP participants have traditionally staffed public and non-profit day camps, maintained municipal park and recreation facilities, cleaned and rehabilitated school buildings and public housing projects, tutored children and staffed day care centers.
