Developing and maturing the technology at pilot scale will spur the development of necessary equipment, understanding, and characterization needed for larger-scale sCO2 power conversion systems.
Over the last decade, GTI project staff (formerly with Aerojet Rocketdyne) established a leadership position in sCO2 technology with work in cycle modeling and optimization, economic evaluations, advanced materials characterization, and design studies of key components (such as turbines, compressors, and recuperators.
Collaborators at Duke-NUS, the Singapore Eye Research Institute and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore found that SCO2 gene expression decreased in the nearsighted eye, suggesting that SCO2 may play a role in the development of nearsightedness.
In the body, the SCO2 gene helps metabolize copper, an element important for regulating oxygen levels in eye tissue.
GTI said, in Brayton power cycles, high-power-density turbomachinery uses sCO2 as the working fluid.
SwRI said, as compared to conventional techniques, the turbomachinery power cycles with the use of sCO2 can reach higher thermal efficiencies.
A second objective of the project is to optimize novel, printed circuit heat exchangers for sCO2
applications to drastically reduce their manufacturing costs.
The highly cyclical nature of CSP plant operation requires an sCO2 hot gas turbo-expander to operate at high temperatures and pressures over a wide range of load conditions while maintaining high efficiency, handling rapid transient heat input swings, and offering very fast start-up to optimize the plant s online availability.
