For the next five years the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) will be jointly managed by the University of West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Unit (SRU) and the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP), bringing the Caribbean's only currently erupting volcano back under the watch of regional scientists, reports Caribbean Net News (April 2, 2008).
"The system essentially acts as a kind of doctor's stethoscope so we can directly listen to the pulse of the volcano," said Richard Robertson, director of the Seismic Research Unit at the University of the West Indies, who manages the region's seismic monitoring network.
The Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO), an international team of scientists led by members of the Seismic Research Unit from the University of the West Indies and the British Geological Survey (BGS), had advised the local government that Salem was now "unsafe".
