Are IUID, RFID and Serialized Item Management (SIM) being leveraged to reduce program and/or platform costs?
The capabilities required to implement this instruction include enhanced diagnostics and prognostics, failure trend tracking, electronic maintenance aids, serialized item management, automatic identification technology, and interactive maintenance training.
As the focal point for the DoN Serialized Item Management Strategy (SIM), DoN SIM will establish a strategic direction for the implementation of emerging information tracking technologies which will support enhanced data availability including Item Unique Identification (IUID).
The Department now requires the use of Item Unique Identifiers (IUIDs) for items that meet established criteria, such as those having a unit cost in excess of $5,000 and requiring serialized item management. This IUID, which associates a unique number with military equipment assets meeting these criteria, will make it easier to track and account for items as they move between programs and reporting organizations.
--Implementation of a prudent serialized item management (SIM) program
The Falcon Flex program and its utilization of the DRILS maintenance data collection tool is a solid model for the Air Force as it pushes ahead with the implementation of serialized item management. The goal is to stop buying high-failure parts and to reduce the time to procure improved parts which in turn increases the reliability and availability of weapon systems while reducing sustainment costs.
An example of how IUID is becoming an integral part of DoD business processes can be found in DoD Instruction 4151.19, "Serialized Item Management (SIM) for Materiel Maintenance," signed by Ken Krieg, USD(AT&L) on Dec.
The Department now requires the use of the item unique identifiers (IUID) for items that meet established criteria, such as those having a unit cost in excess of $5,000 and those requiring serialized item management. The IUIDs, which associate a unique number with these military equipment assets, will make it easier to track and account for items as they move between programs and reporting organizations.
Greg Sparks, speaking about his experience with the C-17 program, said that serialized item management enhanced by UID has already begun to show its potential.
