Nomura, recently ensconced as Setagaya Public Theatre's new artistic director, brought together a cast of Japanese actors trained in a diverse array of established theatrical styles--kyogen, kabuki, new kabuki, shingeki (western-style modern theatre) and "little underground" theatre--and placed them in the hands of the 56-year-old Kent, the former co-artistic director of Britain's Almeida theatre (who received critical plaudits in London and on Broadway for his dark, streamlined production of the tragedy, which won Ralph Fiennes a Tony).
