In light of its new findings, the Shark Specialist Group is calling for "immediate national and international fishing limits, including complete bans on landing those species assessed as 'endangered' or 'critically endangered'," said Sonja Fordham, deputy chair of the group and an officer at The Ocean Foundation.
"The traditional view of oceanic sharks and rays as fast and powerful too often leads to a misperception that they are resilient to fishing pressure," Sonja Fordham, report co-author and deputy head of the IUCN's shark specialist group, said.
The authors, IUCN's Shark Specialist Group, said that a main cause of the drop in population of sharks is overfishing.
Species hunted on the high seas are particularly at risk, with more than half in danger of dying out, reported the Shark Specialist Group at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) development of the Shark Specialist Group is indicative of the increasing environmental awareness of sharks' crucial ecological role as apex predators and that they are being threatened by human activities.
