The old system of deceased kidney donor categorization used the classification of standard criteria donor (SCD) or expanded or extended criteria donor (ECD).
There is risk in accepting an 'extended criteria' kidney since the transplants are less successful in the long term, but also a risk to waiting longer on dialysis for a standard criteria donor.
There are only two classifications for deceased donor kidneys within the current allocation system: standard criteria donor (SCD) and expanded criteria donor (ECD).
The patients, aged 18 years or older, who were expected to receive a kidney transplant from a standard criteria donor were included in BENEFIT (Belatacept Evaluation of Nephroprotection and Efficacy as First-line Immunosuppression Trial).
Standard criteria donor (SCD) kidney recipients were slightly older than 66 years on average at the time of the transplant, but their donors died at a mean age of 39 years.
We were off 100 deceased donors last year and almost all were standard criteria donors (SCD).
The distinction between Standard Criteria Donors (SCD) and Extended Criteria Donors (ECD) should be considered a continuum.
There have been modest increases in Donation After Cardiac Death (DCD), Extended Criteria Donors (ECD) and Standard Criteria Donors (SCD).
3% increase in DCD in 2004 while at the same time increasing standard criteria donors (SCD) by 9.
