The concept behind large-Eddy simulations is that only the large, energy-carrying scales of motion are computed exactly and the effect of the subgrid scales, which tend to be more isotropic and easier to parameterize than the large ones, is modeled.
This approach has a realistic potential of producing a parameterization of a similar or better quality to the existing physically based parameterizations that are used in GCMs, effectively taking into account subgrid scale (in terms of a GCM) effects at a fraction of the computational cost of the existing approaches.
We note that this formulation of habitat quality is overly simplistic: (1) each particle perceives only its own natal patch and (2) it fails to incorporate the logical corollary that the spatial distribution of birth locations should be patchy at the subgrid scale. We made simulations with each of 6 patch radii ranging from 5-50 m (Table 1).
In addition to the eight turbulence models, our study added two LES subgrid scale models and two DES models, as listed in Table 1.
