It is a very-high resolution surface relief structure which forms a birefringent grating to diffract light in the zero order--ie the normal, or perpendicular angle--whereas in most optically variable devices produced as surface relief gratings the zero-order diffraction, is unused although always present.
In order to produce visual pixelographic or kinematic effects (5) by using binary reflective surface relief gratings it is convenient to use grating depth about 140 nm and grating period around 1.1 um.
