The original THTM curriculum, however, has been revised.
This evaluation determined the extent to which trained teachers, and the schools they represent, have implemented THTM. Implementation may be exemplified by use, completeness or quantity of use, and fidelity or quality of use of the curriculum.(13) The evaluation also identified factors and problems related to implementation of THTM, determined teachers' intentions to participate in a THTM reconvening workshop, and recorded types of technical assistance teachers would like to receive from the training agency.
During 1986-1989, to assess the effects of THTM on selected student health-risk behaviors, a large-scale controlled evaluation was conducted by a private research organization with technical oversight from an external committee of health education research experts (4 ).
Students were exposed to THTM for 36-38 45-minute classes (approximately 27 hours) during a 16- to 18-week semester.
Each of the implemented curricula included a series of lessons or activities: 13 for the THTM, 12 for Project SMART, and 83 for Growing Healthy.
I invite the leadership in the fields of education and public health to study carefully this report, to redouble their efforts to generate policies and programs at the school level in support of teacher training and optimal implementation of proven curricula like THTM.
In the evaluation design article, the authors describe the study design and intervention methods used to assess the effectiveness of the THTM and the consequences of pre-implementation training among experimental teachers.
The four primary objectives of the THTM evaluation in priority order were to:
Effect size for increased knowledge of students exposed to THTM was large (0.84), while effect sizes for attitudes (0.50) and practices (0.42) were more modest (Table 1).
In the THTM evaluation, an experimental sub-study examined a number of related issues: Does training teachers in THTM enhance a teacher's preparedness to teach the curriculum?
Among other findings, the preceding article discussed the effect of a structured training program on teachers who subsequently used the Teenage Health Teaching Modules (THTM) for the first time.
2) THTM had the clearest and largest effects in improving student health knowledge.
