The main objectives of the legal study include identification of the legal status of the three national parks as World Heritage site, analysis of gaps and recommendation solutions with regards to national and international law and practice, analysis of the institutional and governance weaknesses for the sustainable management of the three national parks of the TRHS, and to propose legal recommendations for alternative transportation in the TRHS.
Hamdani from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, met in USU campus in Medan to discuss with regards to the progress of the ongoing legal study and the main issues of the TRHS in terms of its legal status and protection.
The discussion highlighted different aspects such as the different legal frameworks for protected areas in Indonesia, the harmonization of local and national laws, the involvement of local and indigenous communities and their customary laws, or the legal implications of protecting the outstanding universal value of TRHS from further threats such as road development, deforestation or mining.

Arief Rachman, who remarked that Indonesian Government has a high responsibility to comply with its promise in maintaining the TRHS as a natural world heritage with Outstanding Universal Value.
Within this project, UNESCO is requesting proposals for Legal Status Analysis of the Road Development Planned in TRHS, Socio-economic Impact Assessment, Ecological Impact Assessment leading to integrated SEA.
The Marine Corps has contracted Mainstream Engineering Corporation to develop an exhaust gas heat recovery system to replace the TRHS burner and completely eliminate the fuel consumption.
