In "Training Tutors in Emotional Intelligence: Toward a Pedagogy of Empathy," Noreen Lape discusses the ambivalence of writing center tutor training manuals regarding emotion, finding in them a tendency "to prepare tutors for encounters with distressed writers by defining or categorizing the problem types and suggesting how to approach them" (2).
My findings echo Lape's: just as with tutor training manuals, these journals "concentrate far more on cognitive than affective skills" (2).
This policy has been codified in tutor training manuals with the concept of higher order and lower order concerns--higher order concerns consisting of large-scale organizational and focus-related issues and lower order concerns consisting of sentence-level issues.
The only contributor who seems to offer a vision of writing center history as static is Harvey Kail, who unearths a kind of ur-text or "master narrative" underwriting tutor training manuals from the 1970s and '80s and argues that it (inescapably?) constructs the tutor's development as one of "separation, initiation, and return" (73, 74).
I turned initially for answers to tutor training manuals. I noticed that most manuals concentrate far more on cognitive than affective skills, which tend to be addressed in one chapter.
