Children with unilateral congenital below elbow deficiency (UCBED) routinely are fitted with the prostheses and are encouraged to wear them through childhood since it seems that they should have functional problems.
James and her associate Anita Bagley, Ph.D., both of Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California, Sacramento, used two well-known functional outcomes tests, as well as one they designed and validated themselves--called the Unilateral Below Elbow Test--to measure the quality of life and function of 494 children with UCBED, 336 (68%) of whom wore prostheses.
On the PODCI, the children with UCBED scored lower than the general population on upper extremity function but for other domains showed no difference.
