The primary goal of the UMAYC Initiative is to create a network of urban Aboriginal youth centres to support and assist urban Aboriginal youth in enhancing their economic, social, educational and personal prospects.
"The government of Canada is pleased to extend the UMAYC Initiative for two years and continue to meet the objectives of its youth agenda and Aboriginal action plan," Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps said after announcing the extension on April 1.
Among the programs offered are Air Cadets, floor hockey, dancing, snowmobiling, arts and crafts, and theatre, with a total of 750 youth registered for the various opportunities of the Urban Multi-purpose Aboriginal Youth (UMAYC) program.
