To help build commitment, USSTC had created a category-specific management program for supermarkets.
Part of the management process for USSTC is to drive new sales by putting the best information in front of retailers.
While USSTC is trying to grow its existing business, the company is also bringing new smokeless products to market.
Referring to USSTC's traditional price-value offering with Red Seal, as well as its sub-price-value tier with Husky, Jon Schwartz, a spokesman for the Stamford, Conn.-based company, says it will compete at each price-value tier with high-quality products.
Last June, USSTC rolled out Skoal Apple Blend, which Schwartz says is the latest in a line of unique new flavors from Skoal; it followed 2003's successful launch of Skoal Vanilla Blend.
In October, USSTC launched two new products--Copenhagen and Skoal pouches--into the marketplace.
On the promotional side, USSTC is conducting the Skoal 4-speed sweepstakes, which will provide 10 randomly selected adult grand prize winners with four speed adventures involving cars, boats, trucks and airplanes in a variety of exciting locations.
According to USSTC, moist smokeless tobacco is the only growing segment of the tobacco industry, with 800 million cans sold annually--almost double the total of 20 years ago.
USSTC's data also shows that within the grocery channel, adult consumers purchase an average of 3.5 cans of moist smokeless tobacco per trip compared to 2.2 cans per trip in the convenience store channel.
