The VACI aims to provide an interactive index that evaluates and ranks countries based on the nature, extent and intensity of cruelty associated with farm animal production and consumption in a sample of 50 countries that together account for almost 80 percent of the world's farm animal population,' it said.
The VACI assesses countries based on three factors: producing cruelty, consuming cruelty and sanctioning cruelty.
The country's dependency on farm animals is low, with around 2 farm animals per person [compared with a global average of around 4],' the VACI said.
In terms of consumption cruelty, the Philippines was ranked 10th after the VACI found that the Filipino diet contains a relatively low proportion of animal products as a source of protein at only around 30.
While the Philippines has legislated animal-welfare protections, the API notes the difficulty in improving animal welfare given agricultural production ranges from backyard farms to large-scale intensive systems,' VACI said.
