Business grew so well that VFIS started using local agents to write new accounts.
He noted, though, that VFIS' market share is "60% of the volunteer first-responding organizations in North America" and its retention rate over the past 10 years stands at almost 96%.
VFIS also covers watercraft and all-terrain vehicles needed by some fire departments, Seifert said, along with rescue vehicles that support the firefighters at the scene but aren't used for putting out fires per se.
Since 1980, VFIS has handled nearly 400,000 claims for emergency service organizations.
About 2,800 brokers are in VFIS' distribution channel, Seifert said.
VFIS has an entire library of risk communiques that are available to policyholders.
"VFIS delivered 374 classes, had 19,997 contacts in 2012 and offered more client educational products than any other emergency service insurance program."
