At the current stage of development, Jaycor's VMMD can detect antitank and antipersonnel mines, both metallic and non-metallic (plastic), on the surface and underground.
While tests began in July 1994, results for these and the most recent round of tests (conducted in April 1998) for the VMMD have not yet been released by the Army; however, Jaycor informed JED that the results have showed consistent improvement.
Challenges facing Jaycor's standoff mine detector include the fact that, at the moment, a full cycle of data acquisition is required for every meter of forward movement and the speed of data throughput is such that the vehicle on which the VMMD is mounted can make speeds of only up to five km/hr.
