On June 10, 1998, VSAE sued the state of Vermont in the form of the Secretary of State in Washington County Superior Court sitting in Montpelier, Vermont.
As our legal team turned its attention to what seemed to be an endless stream of roadblocks thrown up by the attorney general representing the state, we at VSAE turned our attention to fundraising.
Much of our early fundraising activity centered on VSAE members and the small corps of contract lobbyists in Vermont.
Of the 54 VSAE members, only about two thirds did actual lobbying.
In the end, VSAE presented briefs and arguments at both levels of the Vermont state court system--the superior court and the supreme court--and triumphed at both.
Associations in the state of Vermont, and possibly those in other states, are now well protected from the lobby tax and other similar taxes due to the efforts of VSAE and ASAE.
Jacobs was the primary provider of in-kind legal assistance to VSAE.
