Brower, Zar, and von Ende (1990) present the t-test statistic used here, but my search of publications about the variance-to-mean ratio test could not find a precedent for it.
Analytical evaluation in [3] has revealed that the lead time demand should not be approximated by the Poisson distribution unless the variance-to-mean ratio is exactly 1, and that the gamma and the negative binomial distributions yield fairly good results especially when there is much more variability in data.
