Although the bridge is once again a useful structure, its importance goes far beyond its utilitarian purpose, says Kathleen Kilpatrick, director of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources
. Historic preservation "is not so much about old buildings and old structures," she says, "but about people and communities and serving communities by rebuilding on the assets that we have through our historic resources.
My assignment was to survey at least fifty historic properties, to develop and draft the historic context for the community, conduct the research, document the properties, draw site plans, collect and take photographs, organize archival documentation, begin database entry, and write the final report to be submitted to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources
office in Richmond.
