Large warehouse operators can reduce "well-to-wheels" greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80 percent with the move to fuel cells.
Although the carbon intensity of electricity delivered to a BEV is relevant, so-called "well-to-wheels" emissions per mile is a superior metric, because it includes everything from primary energy production to the vehicle's energy efficiency.
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, lifecycle GHG emissions from tar sands crude are 81 per cent higher than conventional crude on a well-to-tank basis, and 17 per cent higher on a well-to-wheels basis.
The funding request also seeks $100 million for research and development to create best "well-to-wheels" practices to further reduce greenhouse gases and protect the environment.

It also contains a tool that calculates average well-to-wheels emissions of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) based on the sources of electricity in a given geographic location.
Such a comparison might involve two equivalent mid-sized cars, e.g., the gasoline-powered conventional vehicle Nissan Altima, and the Nissan Leaf, on a "well-to-wheels" basis, starting with a common energy source, for example, crude oil.
The X Prize Foundation set up a $10 million prize pool (Progressive Insurance signed on later as a title sponsor) to reward teams that could present a car that achieves the equivalent of at least 100 miles per gallon of gasoline, emits less than 200 grams of carbon dioxide per mile (taking into account the full well-to-wheels fuel cycle) and meets EPA standards for other emissions.
