Summary: Kathmandu, [Nepal], August 31 (ANI): Citing high resettlement and rehabilitation costs, China is planning to make an exit from 750-megawatt West Seti hydropower project in Nepal, reported the South China Morning Post quoting sources in Kathmandu.
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has invited officials of China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC) to visit Kathmandu by the end of this month to finalize their long-delayed joint venture deal so that the construction of the 750 MW West Seti Hydropower Project can start.
Constant delays also confound the Korea South East Power company (KOSEP) building Nepal's 216 MW Upper Trisuli I plant, whose spokesperson Kim Joon Hyung rues that: "Unlike other countries, the Nepal government cannot multitask." Four years earlier, Australian consultancy firm SMEC had bid adieu to the West Seti hydropower project for similar reasons.
The projects running behind schedule include three hydropower projects- the West Seti Hydropower Project, the Kulekhani 3 Hydropower Project and the Budhigandaki Hydropower Project.
China has already received approval from Nepal for constructing the West Seti hydropower project, while discussions on the Pokhara airport project are in progress.
In an exclusive interview with Qatar Tribune, Nepal's ambassador to Qatar HE Ramesh Prasad Koirala said Qatari entities like Qatar Airways and Nebras Power have shown great interest in investing in Nijgadh International Airport and West SETI Hydropower projects respectively of Nepal.
