This unequal distribution of "material and symbolic advantages" has been noted in Zimbabwe, where the state-controlled media are allegedly used as ZANU PF propaganda tools (Chuma, 2005, 2008; Moyse, 2009; Waldahl, 2005).
Given that the state media's pro-ZANU PF and anti-opposition stance and the private press's anti-ZANU PF and pro-MDC stance are well documented (Chari, 2008; Chimedza, 2008; Chuma, 2005, 2008; Mazango, 2005; Media Monitoring Project Zimbabwe, 2002; Moyo, 2005; Moyse, 2009; Nyamanhindi, 2008; Rusike, 1990; Saunders, 1999), I seek to establish how the two newspapers covered Joice Mujuru, a ZANU PF and state deputy president, at a time when ZANU PF was at war with itself and Mujuru was under vicious attack from the first lady, the president, and some senior party officials.
Though it is not yet clear who exactly is behind him, Dr Ibbo Mandaza, an academic, and the retired Major Kudzai Mbudzi (who was booted out of Zanu PF for going against a key party directive) have openly stood by Dr Makoni.
It is also believed that a number of business personalities, some Zanu PF members and a group of Western diplomats, are backing Makoni from behind the scenes.
It was ironic that Mr Chihuri was talking about ``international policing and the rule of law'' when Zanu PF was being ``implicated in widespread human rights abuses'', Mrs Kinnock claimed.
At its summit in Tanzania last March, the SADC mandated the South African president, Thabo Mbeki, to facilitate dialogue between President Robert Mugabe's Zanu PF and the two MDC factions led by Morgan Tsvangirai and Prof Arthur Mutambara, after a spate of running battles between opposition supporters and police officers.
The sources said Tsvangirai and Mutambara had agreed with Zanu PF on a draft constitution which will be subject to scrutiny by the general public after the March elections.

The SADC position is further reinforced by the bold decision to appoint President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa as the mediator with a view to facilitating a resolution of the crisis through dialogue between Zanu PF and the democratic forces.
