Astronomers enlisted the combined multi-wavelength capabilities NASA's Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes to do a first-of-a-kind study of GJ 3470 b's atmosphere.
G22.56-0.2 is an IRDC originally identified in images from the Spitzer Space Telescope's GLIMPSE survey.
We construct a visual reference to help people understand science," says Robert Hurt, a visualization scientist at NAS6Is Spitzer Science Center, "whether that's taking data from the Spitzer Space Telescope and turning it into an image or looking at a result and creating a piece of artwork that helps communicate the main idea."
He said: "The UK's WASP project, funded by the STFC research council, is finding many planets that are prime targets for NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. It's fascinating to find a planet with so much carbon, and to imagine what other sorts of planet are out there."

The discovery, based largely on observations from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, should provide a better understanding of the roots of our universe, and how the very first black holes, galaxies, and stars all came to be.
The image was produced by combining a near-infrared view from the Hubble Space Telescope, an infrared view from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and an X-ray view from the Chandra Xray Observatory into one multiwavelength picture.
Topics include the first in-depth presentation of Spitzer Space Telescope mid-IR spectroscopy and imaging/photometry; new detailed theoretical modeling of the relationship and interaction between starbursts and AGN; and major new studies of the local universe from SDSS and other ground-based radio, IR/optical, and space-based x-ray observatories.
Scientists using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope have found that at least 20%--and perhaps as many as 60%--of Sunlike stars could have rocky planets.
The minus 158C doughnut of dust and ice was spotted under infra-red light by the US Spitzer space telescope.
