'The Palace confirms that the President has requested Congress to approve the further extension of martial law and the suspension of the privilege of the
writ of habeas corpus in the whole of Mindanao for another year starting next month,' Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
"With the continuation of martial law and the suspension of the privilege of the
writ of habeas corpus, we expect to achieve substantial progress in addressing the persisting rebellion in Mindanao, as well as promoting the overall security and peace and order situation in the island," he said.

The
writ of habeas corpus, which means 'to produce the body,' is a court order for individuals or agencies to bring a detained person before the court issuing the order and to explain the validity of their detention.
The privilege of the writs of amparo and habeas data, as well as other protective writs, may still be resorted to unless prejudicial to public order even when the privilege of the
writ of habeas corpus is suspended.
'The petitioners have not presented facts to disprove the statement of General Guerrero that the extension of the proclamation of martial law and suspension of the privilege of the
writ of habeas corpus in Mindanao will significantly help not only the Armed Forces of the Philippines but also the other stakeholders in putting an end to the ongoing rebellion and in restoring public order, safety and stability in Mindanao,' Calida added.
Nevertheless, Lacson assured the public that if Duterte suspends the
writ of habeas corpus it will only cover those who are "judicially charged" for rebellion and basic rights will still be upheld.
