Hanley and his research team recruited 720 adults from 11 emergency departments across the nation who presented with a closed head injury. After standard clinical assessment tests by a doctor or nurse to characterize the patient's symptoms, the Ahead 300 device was used to measure EEG data--essentially tracking and recording brain wave patterns.
Once an important part of the head injury evaluation, skull radiographs have been replaced by CT scans and are rarely used in patients with closed head injury. Skull x-rays are poor predictors of intracranial pathology and should not be performed to evaluate adult TBI.

It is to be used on patients who sustained a closed head injury within 24 hours, clinically present as a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), and are between the ages of 18-80 years.
