The researchers found that at least one
herpes zoster episode was confirmed in 49 vaccine recipients and 135 placebo recipients during the 21-month median follow-up (incidence, 30 and 94 per 1,000 person-years, respectively), for an incidence rate ratio (IRR) of 0.32, equivalent to vaccine efficacy of 68.2 percent.
"Since the introduction of the chickenpox vaccine, we have known how effective it is in preventing children from contracting that itchy and painful disease, but we set out to determine if the vaccine would also reduce risk of
herpes zoster. Our findings demonstrate that the vaccine does reduce the likelihood of shingles in kids, highlighting the dual benefits of the chickenpox vaccine," explained lead investigator Sheila Weinmann in the Journal of Pediatrics.
Compared with placebo, a 5-mg twice-daily maintenance dose of tofacitinib (Xeljanz) produced a 2.1-fold greater risk of
herpes zoster infection (95% confidence interval, 0.4-6.0), while a 10-mg, twice-daily dose produced a statistically significant 6.6-fold increase in incidence (95% CI, 3.2-12.2).
Emily Baumrin, MD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, and her coauthors reviewed 41 studies of
herpes zoster in people with psoriasis or PsA, according to treatment modality.

herpes zoster infection at the Chief Tony Anenih Geriatric Centre.
There were 801 records of
herpes zoster according to the proposed criteria.
"Reassuringly, we found that in older patients with autoimmune diseases, the
herpes zoster vaccine was effective in the short term, and that its effectiveness waned over time as reported in the Journal of Rheumatology.
Several nervous and cutaneous reactions that occurred after
herpes zoster have been reported.
To prevent RZV administration errors, vaccine providers should be aware of prescribing information, storage requirements, preparation guidelines, and ACIP recommendations for
herpes zoster vaccines (1,2).
Herpes zoster infection affects the sensory nerves of the thoracic dermatomes most often, followed by the cranial nerves.
The virus remains latent in the sensory ganglia and can reactivate later in life, causing
herpes zoster, also known as shingles.
