The song sparrow
ring is unlikely to have formed via a strict geography-based model (Classical I or Classical II) for the evolution of a ring species, a model in which populations diverge at the leading edge of an advancing front around a geographic barrier and are reproductively isolated at secondary contact (Jordan 1905, Mayr 1942).
Summary: TEHRAN (FNA)- Territorial song sparrows
use increasingly threatening signals to ward off trespassing rivals.
For those species with more than five nests, grasshopper sparrows, eastern meadowlarks, bobolinks (Dolichanyxaryzivarus) and song sparrows
had the greatest overall nest success, while red-winged blackbirds, brown thrashers (Toxostoma rufum), and willow flycatchers had the least (Table 1).
The feeding habits and preferences of four species of songbirds, northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis), song sparrows
(Melospiza melodia), dark-eyed juncos (Junco hyemalis), and white-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) were examined from November to February of 1980-81, 1981-82, and 1982-83.
The Mandarte song sparrow
population shows marked density dependence in reproductive success and survival (Arcese et al.
3) Shrub cover, shrub density, tree and snag density, and vegetation height were included in song sparrow
models (Arcese et al.
Fortunately for Chris Templeton, these are song sparrows
, so be can put radio transmitters on them to figure out where they go.
I am extremely grateful to Peter Arcese and Jamie Smith for providing the Song Sparrow
data, and for their supportive and critical comments.
Discrimination of song types and variants in song sparrows
Each song sparrow
has a repertoire of only eight songs on average, a number similar to the repertoires of individual juncos, cardinals, and western meadowlarks.
Washington, Oct 21 (ANI): It takes at least two adult birds to teach a young song sparrow
how and what to sing, a new study has found.
Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) was the most-caught bird (14 captures), followed by Acadian Flycatcher (Empidonax virescens) (10) and Song Sparrow
(Melospiza melodia) (9).
